FOMC + Four Mag-7 Reports — The Biggest Week of the Summer

The Fed's rate decision Wednesday, GDP and core PCE Thursday, and Microsoft, Meta, Apple & Amazon reporting within 24 hours of each other. The central question is whether AI-driven revenue growth can continue to justify rising infrastructure spending.

Macro Context

The week combines three market-moving forces: the July FOMC decision on Wednesday, Q2 GDP and June core PCE on Thursday, and four large-cap technology reports within 24 hours. The near-term debate is no longer simply whether AI demand is real. It is whether cloud, advertising, and enterprise-software revenue are growing fast enough to support another step up in infrastructure spending. Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon will be judged primarily on that trade-off, while Apple provides a read on consumer demand, services, and its AI rollout.

Fed policy is unusually important because a hold at 3.50–3.75% remains the market's base case, but investors are assigning meaningful probability to a 25-basis-point hike. Chair Kevin Warsh has offered limited forward guidance, making his press conference central to the market reaction. Energy and trade policy add to the inflation risk: Brent ended last week near $97 per barrel after sharp Middle East-driven swings, while the U.S. announced fresh tariffs on dozens of countries. Thursday's GDP and PCE data will show whether those pressures are beginning to affect growth, spending, and inflation.

KEY WATCHAzure growth, capex trajectory
CONTEXTReports hours after FOMC

Azure is the commercial backbone of OpenAI's products. After Alphabet's capex raise was punished despite a beat, Microsoft's own spending trajectory gets the same scrutiny.

Apple carries less direct AI capex baggage than its peers this week, which could make it either a relative safe haven or a disappointment if services growth disappoints instead.

What We're Watching — 6 Themes
Fed Policy
Hold Is the Base Case, Not a Certainty

A hold remains the most likely outcome, but higher energy prices and tariffs have created a meaningful hike tail risk. Warsh's press conference is the key policy signal.

AI Capex Reckoning
Revenue Must Validate the Spend

Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon need to show that cloud, advertising, and enterprise demand are scaling quickly enough to support higher AI infrastructure investment.

Inflation & Growth
GDP + Core PCE, Same Morning as Apple/Amazon Setup

Thursday pairs the growth/inflation double with the run-up to that evening's Apple and Amazon reports — a genuinely dense 24-hour stretch.

Geopolitics & Energy
Oil and Tariffs Add Inflation Risk

Middle East supply concerns kept Brent near the high-$90s after a volatile week. Fresh U.S. tariffs on dozens of countries add another potential inflation channel.

Earnings Season Scale
Guidance Matters More Than Headlines

The busiest stretch of earnings season shifts attention from reported beats to forward demand, capital spending, and whether margin pressure is contained.

Tuesday Setup
Consumer & Industrial Names Before the Storm

Starbucks, Chipotle, O'Reilly, and Lam Research report Tuesday, offering a last consumer/industrial read before Wednesday's twin shock.
